There will be a gift exchange for those who choose to participate. Secretary will call for RSVPs to determine how much pizza to buy. Shari Friebus will order the pizza and have it delivered.

Annual Show:
Indian Mary Park: Show Chairperson Carolyn Strunge talked with Sarah Wright, Josephine County Parks director. Based on that discussion, Lake Selmac Park was deemed unsuitable for our Show. Josephine County Parks welcomes the RVKC dog show at Indian Mary Park. RVKC will be able to reserve the Park, without a deposit, three years in advance. Accordingly, RVKC now has Indian Mary Park reserved for our Show dates in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Show preparations will start in earnest in January. Volunteers will be essential for all tasks.

Publicity:

    • The Show newspaper was very well received in 2019. It helped advertise the Show and brought many people from the community out to the show. Volunteers will be required to contact businesses to sell ads in the 2020 Show Newspaper. Interested members please contact Show Chair Carolyn Strunge, President Lorain Abel, or Treasurer Mary Ward for more information.

    • Ideas and assistance in additional methods to advertise the Show are welcome.

SOKC: SOKC has requested a dialog with RVKC about the possibility of re-forming a Cluster on their November weekend at the Expo. The Board approved opening a dialog. After a discussion of Show plans for 2020 between SOKC and RVKC, SOKC declined to join us on our weekend at Indian Mary Park. Also, RVKC has declined to join SOKC for a cluster for 2020 since we are committed to Indian Mary Park on our weekend. The possibility of re-forming a Cluster in future years has been left open.

Committees: RVKC Committees, including Show Committees, will need to be formed. Budget and Audit are the first committees that need to be formed so that their tasks can be completed by no later than mid-February.

Directories: Directory copies in addition to the copy included with membership may be ordered for $2.00, which covers the printing cost. Please contact the Secretary to request additional copies to determine how many copies to print.

Brags and Cries were heard.

7:05 pm Motion by Shari Friebus to adjourn. Seconded by Lucille Perry. Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,
Cherie Ball

Minutes: Motion by Lucille Perry to approve the September General Meeting minutes. Seconded by Sharon Watson. Carried.

Treasurer’s report: Treasurer’s written report filed for audit.

OLD BUSINESS

2019 Show:

  • Thanks: Lorain Abel thanked everyone who helped at the Show.

  • Show Chairperson for 2020: Carolyn Strunge is the Show Chair for 2020 and 2021.

  • Alternate site for 2020?: Lorain Abel and Carolyn Strunge inspected the Josephine County Fairgrounds to evaluate it as a possible site for the Show. For several reasons it was found to be inadequate. Consequently, the Show will remain at Indian Mary Park, which received considerable positive feedback from exhibitors. The Club will attempt to re-negotiate the rental fee with the Park for 2020.

  • Show weekend: The Club will remain with the current AKC show week, the 38th week.

  • 2019 Finances: BaRay gave the Club a $3000 discount this year due to the low entries.

  • Suggestions for future Shows: Suggestions and ideas with possible solutions are encouraged.

Handling Class: Classes have started and are going well.
Nominating Committee: Chairperson Shari Friebus stated that the Committee will meet soon.

NEW BUSINESS

Holiday party: It was decided that the Club will buy pizza and attendees will bring desserts. There will be a gift exchange for those who choose to participate.

  • 2020 Show meeting: The first Show meeting will be in January

  • Post-Show inspection: On Monday after the Show, a team needs to inspect the grounds for a final clean-up.

Scholarship Committee: After repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact the current Scholarship recipient, a certified letter was sent. The letter received no response. The only other applicant was unqualified. It was suggested that up to $1000 from the Scholarship fund be budgeted to help 4-H members of the canine program, the Pooch Paw Raiders, who qualify to enter the State Fair but cannot afford to go. We may consider doing this form of help as an alternative to awarding a Scholarship since typically these are kids who have demonstrated a long term interest in dogs and dog activities. The subject will be discussed at the next Board meeting.

Fruitdale Grange: The Grange has expressed a desire for an RVKC person to be a member of the Grange ($45/year) or for RVKC to send a member to the monthly Grange meetings. The meetings occur on the morning of the 4th Saturday of each month. It was decided that RVKC does not want to join the Grange. Colleen Douglas will communicate the Club’s decision to the Grange.

2020 CGC classes and test: The dates will be in the Spring since the Show is in September.

2020 RDO Day: This event does not have to be in September. Colleen Douglas, who has previously been organizing the event, offered to help anyone interested in organizing the event in 2020.

    • BIS trophy: BIS trophy for one day of the show will be the original ‘Back to Indian Mary Park’ drawing by cartoonist Russell Myers, who draws the Broom Hilda cartoon. Lorain Abel knows a great framer who will give us a great deal on getting it nicely framed.

RVKC encourages members to consider volunteering to lead a class once a month or to make themselves available on an ‘on call’ basis. Interested people may attend a class to observe what goes on. An email will be sent to the membership describing the classes and asking for volunteers. The classes will have to be canceled if we can not get volunteers The classes usually move outdoors to a park in May or June at the latest and often the classes are canceled for the summer since the parks are crowded and most people are busy.

Handling Seminar: Laura Reeves has proposed conducting a one day Conformation Handling Seminar, sponsored by RVKC, on July 27, 2019 at Home Away From Home Pet Spa. It would run from 10am – 4pm. It will cost $100 for each dog and handler pair with a limit of 15 pairs. It will be $40 to audit the seminar without a dog. The auditors are limited to 10 people. 2019 Show:

  • Budget: With so many unknown expenses and income it is difficult to establish an accurate budget so we are doing our best to make reasonable guesstimates. We should be prepared to lose some money on the Show this year. We will learn from the Show this year and plan for next year.

  • Sponsors:

    • It was suggested that RVKC solicit sponsors to promote Southern Oregon things like Dutch Brothers Coffee, local merchants, and Rogue River rafting, etc.

    • It was also suggested that the Club solicit sponsors to give larger amounts of money. As usual, we would need to find a volunteer to manage sponsorships. Myrna Rafalovich will attend the next Show Meeting to discuss the possibilities.

  • Publicity: Russell Myers, the artist who draws the Broom Hilda cartoon, has created a cartoon on a “Back to the Future” theme. It says “Back to Indian Mary Park” and features a cartoon dog driving a Delorean car. It is planned to make the cartoon into a flyer for distribution at dog shows. Also, the original will be framed and awarded as a BIS trophy.
